Abstract: In this talk, we first introduce the concept of first integrals of ordinary differential equations and their connection with first-order linear partial differential equations. We then present the method of characteristics for solving first-order linear PDE, which reduces PDE problems to a system of ODE along characteristic curves. Furthermore, we extend this method to the initial value problem of the one-dimensional linear wave equation and derive the d'Alembert formula. We illustrate the geometric meaning of characteristics. This talk shows how the method of characteristics serves as a unified tool in analyzing several basic types of partial differential equations.
